The Garrett PD6500 walk through metal detector is a device that detects objects on or inside a person’s body for security screening purposes, without undressing or making physical contact. Depending on the technology used, the operator may see an alternate wavelength image of a person’s nude body, just a cartoon-like representation of a person with an indicator showing where to detect any suspicious items or a complete X-ray image of the person. For privacy and security reasons, the screen is not generally visible to other passengers, and in some cases it is located in a separate room where the operator cannot see the face of the person being scanned. Unlike metal detectors, whole-body scanners can detect non-metallic objects, which has become a growing concern after several attempts at bombing aircraft in the 2000s. Transmission X-ray body scanners can also detect items ingested or hidden in a person’s body cavities.
